Description

Concentrations and stable isotope abundances of particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON). Samples were collected on the MV1008 cruise in the Costa Rica Dome (CRD) region of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean.

Methods & Sampling

Dataset acquisition description

Seawater was obtained at sea from 10-L Niskin bottles on a CTD rosette. Sample volumes of 1.1 L were collected in dark polyethylene bottles, and the contents were filtered onto precombusted 25-mm GF/F filters. Filters were folded into precombusted packets of aluminum foil and frozen in liquid nitrogen. Samples were later stored in a -80°C freezer, and acidified and dried before analysis. Analyses were conducted at the Analytical Facility, Marine Science Institute, UCSB on a Finnigan Delta Plus Advantage continuous flow system with Costech ECS 4010 elemental combustion.

Generic Description:

A Niskin bottle (a next generation water sampler based on the Nansen bottle) is a cylindrical, non-metallic water collection device with stoppers at both ends. The bottles can be attached individually on a hydrowire or deployed in 12, 24, or 36 bottle Rosette systems mounted on a frame and combined with a CTD.
